Does the SVC Library have electronic books?

Yes, the library provides access to two types of electronic books, or ebooks.  Use OneSearch to get links to free ebooks, such as those in the Project Gutenberg collection, as well as those available through our library's subscription services.  Use your MYSVC email and password to access subscribed ebooks from home.

How do I access Ebooks from off campus?

If you are on campus and connected to the SVC Network, all you need to do is go to the library home page.  You can search our library catalog and ebooks will be included in your results if they exist for the topic you search in OneSearch.  You can also go to the "Choose Databases" drop-down list and choose one of the Ebooks databases. If you are off campus, you will be prompted for your SVC email address and password.

Can I check out an Ebook?

You may choose to view any Ebook within our collection without checking it out by clicking on the link to the ebook.

Ebooks in the Ebscohost database may be checked out for varying periods, from one to seven days.  If you click on Download this eBook (Offline), you will be given a choice of a "Checkout Period."  You must create a MyEbscohost account to check out an ebook. When your checkout period is up, the Ebook is automatically checked back in and becomes available for someone else to use. If someone else already has a specific Ebook checked out, you may still view the table of contents, and can also choose to be notified by email when the Ebook becomes available.

Do I need any special software to use Ebooks?

To view ebooks, you should have a current internet browser.  Most will require use of  Adobe Reader for viewing PDFs. To "check out" and download ebooks from Ebscohost, you will need:

Credo Reference and Gale Virtual Reference Library  ebook articles are available to email or download in either pdf or html format.  You may then download chapters or articles within books from these services.

How do I search for Ebooks?

Ebooks may be contained within the results of any search for books, videos, or other library materials in the SVC Library Catalog. When using OneSearch, click on the Online Access link.

You may also search separately in each of the following library databases from the library website, http://library.skagit.edu. : Credo Reference, Ebscohost, or Gale Virtual Reference Library. If you are off campus, you will be prompted for your SVC email address and last name.
