Student Research Guide WQ24/ Tablets and Effects on Kids

Student Research Guide for Library 201/ Kaleigh Pritchard

Major Findings From This Research

From this research, it can be concluded that overexposure to tablets is causing kids to act differently and become mentally altered. From the social pressure of being online to the action of being bent down looking at a screen all day, it is altering children today and how they function. Some of the biggest signs of this include:

  1. Kids' cognitive thinking is delayed
  2. Kids are developing slower, mentally and physically
  3. Kids have worse behavior
  4. Lenient parenting styles
  5. The rise of social awkwardness among children
  6. Declining mental health among adolescents

Research Advice and Reflection

Advice for future researchers:

As this issue is ongoing, it is imperative that it is studied further. At the moment, the future is unknown and we cannot see the full effects of the "iPad Kids". However, this advice will hopefully be helpful to anyone who chooses to continue it. During my research, I found a lot of firsthand accounts surrounding bad behavior in children. However, it was hard to decipher which sources were credible and which were created for views. Finding interviews online or conducting your own using people around you can combat this problem and give you good supporting information.

Another tip I learned was to search for information from scholarly search engines. This provides you with information that is reliable and better supports your claim. The scholarly search engines filter out the clickbait information so you don't have to. It brings articles that will best support your research to the forefront, making the process easier and your work have more value.

Reflection on research experience:

The research process went pretty good. There was a lot of information present about this topic, which was such a relief considering I was worried that there might not be any sufficient research conducted thus far. A place where I got hung up was finding academic sources. I found lots of personal experiences with this issue, however none that I could count as creditable or reliable. While I felt these sources were valuable to my research, I wasn't able to use them and instead had to find other sources that backed up the personal accounts in a more credible way. The most interesting part of the research journey for me was looking at how tablets are marketed. I found this interesting because business is a personal interest of mine, and connecting this topic to it made a lot more fun.

Note From the Author

Something that is important to note while reading this guide is that people's way of life was completely changed through the pandemic. It is hard to tell if we would be in this same situation if the pandemic never happened. Technology use was at an all time high during this time. Many of people's habits and practices were changed. The habits that were developed during the pandemic stuck around, leading us to a society that is constantly connected. Of course, there were traces of technology addiction to begin with. The pandemic might have just sped up the process in becoming a technology obsessed society.
