H. Lennox

Major Findings From This Research

Major findings

  • Positive Effects:

    • Access to mental health resources (e.g., apps, online therapy).

    • Enhanced social connection, especially for marginalized or isolated individuals.

    • Use of AI and digital platforms for early detection and intervention.

    • Education opportunities such as research, credible articles, and instant informative updates

    • Digital literacy, technology provides beneficial resources for jobs and homework avenues

  • Negative Effects:

    • Increased screen time linked to sleep disruption, anxiety, and depression.

    • Social media can contribute to poor self-esteem and cyberbullying.

    • Fear of missing out (FOMO) and digital addiction negatively affect mood and focus.

  • Moderating Factors:

    • Age, personality, and pre-existing mental health conditions influence how technology impacts individuals.

    • The type and purpose of technology use matter—e.g., active engagement vs. passive scrolling.

  • Need for Balance:

    • Encouraging mindful and purposeful technology use can help maximize benefits and minimize harm

Research Advice and Reflection

Advice for future researchers:

In my research on technology and the mental health of adolescents, I quickly realized that many blogs and news articles were opinion-based and lacked scientific support and credibility. I recommend using academic databases like JSTOR, PubMed, or Google Scholar to find peer-reviewed studies. These provided more trustworthy and data-supported insights that you can apply as support. One challenge I faced was the overwhelming amount of information, it is key to be mindful and start narrowing the focus to specific aspects (e.g., social media use or screen time) helped make the research more manageable. Future researchers might explore how different types of technology use (educational vs. recreational) impact mental health differently or how parental guidance and digital literacy affect outcomes. Always check the publication date too—this field evolves quickly, so using the most recent studies is crucial.

Reflection on research experience:

Reflecting on my research experience on the effects of technology on adolescent mental health, I found the process both challenging and eye-opening. At first, I struggled with the overwhelming amount of information and had difficulty separating credible sources from opinion-based articles. Once I began focusing on peer-reviewed studies and academic databases, the research became more manageable and insightful. The most interesting part for me was learning about the nuanced impact of social media and how it can be both a source of connection and a trigger for anxiety or depression depending on how it's used.

As I dug deeper, my interest in the topic actually grew. I realized how detailed and complex it is, especially with how connected teens are to their devices. I also started to think more critically about my own technology use. Overall, this research made me more aware of the need for balance and digital exposure, and it opened my eyes to how much more there is to explore in this field.

Additional Important Items of Note

The relationship between technology use and adolescent mental health is complex and influenced by various factors, including the type of technology, the amount of use, and individual differences among adolescents. While some forms of technology can provide positive support and opportunities for connection, excessive or unregulated use may contribute to negative mental health outcomes such as anxiety, depression, or sleep disturbances. Current research highlights the need for more balanced and nuanced discussions about how technology affects youth. Continued investigation is essential to better understand these impacts and to develop strategies that support healthy technology habits among adolescents. What is known is that the effect on adolescence is too loud to be ignored and there needs to be a change.
