Effects of Technology on Mental Health

This is a student created research guide for English 102 & Library 201 Learning community. This guide was completed in conjunction with a research paper on the same topic for English 102.

This guide will address the effects that the growing world of technology has on our brain; Furthermore the development of children and adolescence.

This thesis focuses on the dual impact of social media and digital technology on adolescents. While these platforms offer opportunities for connection and communication, excessive use is linked to mental health issues such as low self-esteem and clinical disorders. The study underscores the urgent need for education and regulatory measures to mitigate these risks.

Research questions to address:

  1. How does online interaction compare to face-to-face communication in supporting adolescent emotional well-being?
  2. How does technology use during childhood and adolescence affect long-term mental health outcomes?
  3. How does social media use influence self-esteem and body image in teenagers?

Abstract

Abstract

In recent years, the pervasive integration of digital technologies into everyday life has prompted urgent interest into their psychological consequences. This paper explores the complicated relationship between technology use and mental health, driven by increasing concerns over rising rates of anxiety, depression, and social isolation, particularly among younger demographics.

The research aimed to answer the central question: How does regular use of digital technology impact mental health across different age groups?

To investigate this issue, the study employed a mixed-methods approach, combining analysis of survey data from diverse populations with a thematic review of existing psychological assessments. Patterns of technology use, such as screen time, social media engagement, and digital multitasking were measured against self-reported mental health indicators. The research also included qualitative interviews by news reporters to capture personal experiences and perceived effects. The findings indicate a increasingly worrisome relationship between technology and mental health. While moderate use of certain platforms can foster social connection and access to mental health resources, excessive or unregulated use is strongly correlated with increased symptoms of anxiety, sleep disruption, and diminished attention span. Notably, adolescents and young adults were most susceptible to negative outcomes, while older adults often experienced more neutral or even positive effects due to reduced social isolation. These results suggest that the impact of technology on mental health is not uniform, but rather shaped by frequency, type of use, and individual vulnerability. The implications of this research are significant that there is a critical need for public health guidelines on healthy technology use, educational programs that promote digital literacy, and further interdisciplinary research.

Background Information

Technology and mental health are increasingly interconnected as digital tools become more embedded in daily life. On one hand, technology offers innovative solutions for mental health support, such as mobile apps for meditation, online therapy platforms, and AI-powered chatbots for emotional assistance. These tools improve accessibility and convenience, especially for those who face barriers to traditional care. On the other hand, excessive screen time, social media use, and digital overload have been linked to issues like anxiety, depression, and sleep disturbances. As technology continues to evolve, understanding its dual impact on mental health is crucial for promoting well-being in the digital age.

Main Issues:

  • Digital addiction: Overuse of smartphones, social media, and video games can contribute to anxiety, depression, and attention issues.

  • Cyberbullying: Online harassment can severely affect mental health, particularly among teens and young adults.

  • Privacy concerns: Use of mental health apps raises concerns about data security and confidentiality.

  • Access vs. quality: While digital tools improve access to care, not all are evidence-based or regulated.

  • Social comparison and loneliness: Social media can increase feelings of inadequacy and isolation.

Stakeholders:

  • Individuals/Users: People seeking mental health support or those affected by negative digital habits.

  • Mental health professionals: Therapists and counselors integrating technology into treatment.

  • Tech companies: Developers of apps, platforms, and wearable devices aimed at mental health.

  • Government and regulatory bodies: Overseeing digital health standards, privacy laws (e.g., HIPAA, GDPR).

  • Researchers and academics: Studying the effects and efficacy of digital tools on mental well-being.

Timelines:

  • Early 2000s–2010s: Rise of smartphones and social media platforms; growing awareness of digital wellness.

  • 2010s–2020s: Growth of teletherapy and mental health apps; COVID-19 accelerates digital mental health adoption.

  • Present and future: Increasing use of AI and wearables; ongoing debates about ethics, regulation, and long-term effects.

Geographical Information:

  • Global issue: Technology affects mental health worldwide, though access to digital mental health care varies.

  • High-income countries: Greater access to tech-based care but also higher rates of digital overuse.

  • Low- and middle-income countries: Rising smartphone use; growing interest in affordable digital mental health solutions.

Other Significant Aspects:

  • Cultural differences: Stigma and acceptance of both mental health and technology vary across cultures.

  • Generational impacts: Younger generations are more immersed in tech, often showing different mental health trends.

  • Digital literacy: Plays a key role in how effectively people use technology for mental health support.
