This guide will address the effects of TikTok on young people.

The purpose of this guide is to explore issues around TikTok and its negative effects.


The research thesis of this guide is to explore the negative effects of TikTok on the mental and physical health of teenagers, examining how the platform’s content, trends, and usage patterns contribute to issues such as anxiety, depression, body image concerns, and sedentary behavior.

 

The research questions addresses in this guide are:

  • What were some of the biggest negative metal effects of TikTok?
  • Are there prolonged psychological effects?
  • What are some benefits of TikTok and do they out weigh the draw backs?

 

Abstract

The rise of TikTok and its influence on teenagers' lives has raised concerns by the public about its effects on their mental and physical health. With millions of adolescents engaging with the platform daily, it is important to understand its impact, especially given TikTok's addictive algorithm and culture/trends. The problem with TikTok is its negative effects of on youths' mental and physical health, especially on self-esteem, body image, anxiety, and physical activity. TikTok’s short and engaging videos, and trends, presents unique challenges compared to past social media platforms. In studies it was found that TikTok is effecting all sorts of parts in youth's lives. For example, prolonged usage of TikTok leading to lack of sleep resulting in poor academic performance. It was found that TikTok has bad implications in almost all parts of daily life. I believe more research is needed to find the prolonged effects on the human body, but there should be some regulations placed because this is a big global problem with social media addiction in youth.

Background Information

TikTok is a social media platform where users can post, share, like, and interact with others. It has grown very popular amongst Gen Z,  people born between 1997 and 2012. A lot of Gen Z has grown to like TikTok and has become addicted to the platform. The over usage of TikTok causes in youth causes both physical and mental effects. Some negative mental effects include, stress, body image issues, and distorted sense of reality. Some physical effects include, fatigue, eye sores, and effects in cognitive functions. In this Guide we will examine the negative effects that follow over usage of TikTok in youth.

It emphasizes the importance of understanding these effects to promote healthier sleep habits, especially among adolescents and young adults.

 

REASONING BEHIND CHOICE OF MEDIA:

The video below presents the prevalence of mobile phone use/reliance, links between screen time and sleep length, other wide spread impacts, and some positive impacts of TikTok. On top of that, this video compiles multiple scholarly sources together to make a statement about the impacts of TikTok.
