What is this Guide for?

Positives and Negatives of AI in Education

This is a student created research guide for English 102 & Library 201 Learning community. This guide was completed in conjunction with a research paper on the same topic for English 102.

This guide will address the benefits and the risks of AI in education

Artificial intelligence in education offers personalized learning, increased access, and improved efficiency. However, it also introduces challenges such as data privacy concerns, reduced human interaction, and algorithmic bias.

Research Questions:

  1. How is AI currently being used in educational settings?

  2. What benefits does AI bring to students and teachers?

  3. What are the potential risks and ethical concerns related to AI in education?

  4. How can schools balance innovation with responsible AI use?

Abstract

In the rapidly evolving digital age, artificial intelligence (AI) has become increasingly integrated into educational environments, raising urgent questions about its role and impact. This research paper explores the double-edged nature of AI in education, identifying both the remarkable benefits it offers and the significant challenges it poses. The central question guiding this research asked: How does artificial intelligence influence education positively and negatively, and what are the implications for future educational practices? To address this, a variety of peer-reviewed sources were consulted and synthesized, including scholarly journal articles, academic databases, and educational reports that focus on AI applications in teaching and learning. The findings indicate that AI provides valuable advantages, particularly in areas such as personalized learning, improved accessibility for diverse learners, and efficient administrative support. However, the research also reveals pressing concerns—namely, the erosion of human interaction in the classroom, threats to student data privacy, and the risk of algorithmic bias reinforcing existing inequalities. These insights affirm that while AI can enhance educational outcomes, it must be implemented thoughtfully and ethically. The implications of this study suggest a need for more comprehensive regulations surrounding the use of AI in education, greater transparency in algorithmic design, and sustained investment in teacher training and digital literacy. Future research should continue examining how to balance innovation with equity, and how to design AI tools that support—not replace—human educators.

Background Information

Artificial intelligence (AI) in education refers to the use of advanced computer systems and algorithms to support learning, teaching, and administrative tasks. The technology has developed rapidly in recent years, becoming a powerful tool for personalized learning, increased accessibility, and efficiency in educational environments. Key issues include the benefits of AI—such as tailoring instruction to individual student needs and offering 24/7 support—and the challenges, including data privacy risks, reduced human interaction, and algorithmic bias. Stakeholders in this conversation include students, teachers, school administrators, policymakers, and technology developers. Globally, AI is being adopted in schools, colleges, and universities, with major advancements taking place since the 2010s, especially in countries with strong tech industries like the United States, China, and members of the European Union. Understanding both the potential and the limitations of AI is essential for making informed decisions about its role in the future of education.

The video below presents ideas around how artificial intelligence is reshaping education by personalizing learning and making it more accessible. Sal Khan, the founder of Khan Academy, discusses how AI tools like virtual tutors can support students in a human-centered way. This resource is important because it highlights the potential benefits of AI in education while also touching on ethical responsibilities, making it relevant to both the pros and cons of using AI in the classroom.
