Using Encyclopedias For Research

What is an Encyclopedia?

  • The Merriam Websiter Dictionary defines it as:
    • A work that contains information on all branches of knowledge or treats comprehensively a particular branch of knowledge usually in articles arranged alphabetically often by subject.

How is it used for research?

  • A reference source like an encyclopedia is often used at the beginning of a research project to learn some basic facts or details about a subject, like significant figures, dates, and essential features. They can help to explain and inform about a topic that you may not know about, or help to fill out incomplete knowledge that you may have.

How will I use them for class?

  • You will be looking at reference resources for your assignments for week one and if you need to learn some basic facts about a topic.
