Student Research Guide WQ25/ Benefits of AI in Higher Education

J. Rajczi

Major Findings From This Research

Findings:

Educational Institutions have the responsibility of preparing students for their careers and the responsibility to ensure all students have access to AI. Schools that implement AI during this ground breaking technologically advanced time, will become leaders in the AIED world (artificial intelligence in education). Using artificial intelligence ethically in education will benefit educational institutions, educators, and students.

Research Questions and Findings

  • How do educational institutions begin integrating AI in the educational environment?
    • According to the research, it is imperative for schools to create ethical guidelines and standards of use, in collaboration with teachers. There are many examples of these guidelines and tips for integrating them into the institution.
  • What are the benefits to instructors using AI in the classroom?
    • In the video, "Teacher to Teacher: Is AI Reshaping Education for the Better?" two teachers discuss the ways they use AI in the classroom. They explain how to teach students to use AI as a tutor versus using it to cheat and just get the answer.
  • How do students benefit from using AI in the classroom?
    • Students will benefit from using AI in the following ways: instant feedback on written work, idea generation, tutoring on why a problem was incorrect, and data and statistic gathering. In the article “AI Can Help – and Hurt - Student Creativity,” a study was done in which students were asked to think about ways to use a paperclip without using any technology. One month later, the students were asked the same question, and given the use of ChatGPT to help. In this study, “100% of participants found AI helpful for brainstorming. Only 16% of students preferred to brainstorm without AI.” Ethical student use of AI in the classroom will benefit student creativity and grant them experience for later use.
  • What are the negative impacts of using AI in an institution?
    • Some negative impacts include: academic misconduct, bias, privacy and data security.
  • What are some resources to help educational institutions set ethical standards for AI?
    • In the article,“Teaching Tip: Navigating AI in the Classroom,” Ashley Mowreader provides tips and resources for instructors just beginning to work with AI. She shares that she believes it is important to create guidelines for utilizing artificial intelligence in the classroom and has shared that Cornell University and Ohio University have exemplar AI policies for institutions to utilize.
  • Are there studies showing the impact of AI on learning?
    • Ni Yao is affiliated with School of Educational Science, Nanjing Normal University of Special Education, Nanjing, China. He co-wrote a paper and conducted a study related to how educators perceive and use technology in the classroom.
    • Hei and Thouary share that the most important skill for students to learn is “prompt engineering,” in which students learn to ask questions that the AI will respond to with the most helpful answers.

Research Advice and Reflection

Advice for future researchers:

  • AIED (Artificial Intelligence in Education) is spending a lot of money on new technological advancements. One area that could improve is advancement in the privacy and security of sensitive information.
  • AI is currently used in middle schools, high schools, and colleges. Another area to expand will be to include elementary teachers and students, and to ensure equitable access to low income or multi-lingual learner educational institutions.

Reflection on research experience:

The research started slowly. Finding the keywords that would bring trusted results in my findings was difficult. Ensuring these resources were worthwhile and accurate, meant conducting reverse searches and looking for studies disputing the claims.

There are many areas to delve into with AI. Brands, ways to use AI, and how it impacts the future of society are all different paths of research, so it was difficult to stay focused on benefits in education.

The most exciting part was finding images and videos to back up the data that had been gathered.
